Do You Need a Texas Background Check?

How to Receive Your Texas Background Check Results

There are multiple ways to receive the results from your background check depending on who performed the service.  United States citizens typically have the option to receive results in the following ways: 

  • Email Only  
  • Regular Mail  
  • Priority Mail  
  • FedEx Overnight  
  • In-Office Pick Up  

If you are not a U.S. citizen or permanent resident, you have the option to receive your results via regular mail or email.   

Do I Need a Texas Background Check to Buy A Gun?

Although you do not need a background check to purchase handguns or long arms in Texas, you need to obtain a national background check for your CHL (Concealed Handgun License).  

If you are purchasing a handgun from a private individual, no license background check or firearm registration is necessary. Additionally, the state of Texas does not currently require background checks for firearms sold or traded at gun shows by private individuals or unlicensed vendors.

Do I need a Texas Background Check to Carry a Gun?

Open Carry- Only legal with a concealed carry license or Texas License to Carry (LTC). The minimum age for open carry is 21 years old or 18 years old for active-duty military.  

Concealed Carry – Legal with a Texas LTC or concealed carry permit either from Texas or from a state that Texas honors. Texas LTC’s are issued to both residents and non-residents who are at least 21 years of age after the completion of a 4-6-hour training course. In addition, they must pass a written examination and a shooting proficiency demonstration.   

Please Note: A Texas Background Check may be necessary to obtain an LTC or CHL. Texas honors permits from select states who meet certain criteria.
